Designing Sustainable Technology

In Grades 5 and 6, we have been working through the design cycle to come up with sustainable solutions to local, national, and global issues.

We identified the following issues:
  • lack of clean water
  • global waste (plastic and other)
  • wasting paper
  • access to electricity
  • pollution
  • climate change
  • bullying

The photos below show how we worked through the process of asking, imagining, planning, and creating.

At the end of this post, you can see how we shared our creations.

Once we had our prototypes, we asked our classmates for feedback using the visible thinking routine: ladder of feedback.

As designers, this allowed us to see our project from different perspectives.

Once we received some feedback, we integrated them into our final designs which you can see below, along with videos of our presentations!

Claire's Design

We also had Mr. Huber, our school technology expert, guide us to learn about the insides of laptops and how they work.

We even had student-led workshops so that people who chose to sign up could learn skills like coding or video editing!

What a week of learning!

Have a wonderful Golden Week, everyone!

Sustainability

This week, we have been exploring the concept of sustainability.

As inquirers, we used two different methods to deepen our knowledge about this concept.

Some of us interviewed experts within the school community...

...while others researched online, making sure we were using credible sources.

Below, you can see demonstrations of our deepened understandings in the end.

Next week, we will be coming up with sustainable solutions to various issues we have identified in the photo below.

We will be using the design cycle to invent or advance technological tools in an attempt to solve some of these problems.

We have two weeks left in this unit and our unit wall is filling up quickly!

Stay tuned to see what we create!

Inventions

After spring break, we started our fifth unit of the year with the Central Idea:
Technological systems impact the world of work and leisure.

This week, we dove into the Line of Inquiry:
Circumstances and opportunities that led to the development of important inventions

You can see from the photo of our unit wall that upon discussions, we came to the conclusion that technological tools are invented or improved for the following six reasons:

  • to learn and explore
  • to improve people's health
  • to communicate better
  • for convenience
  • for entertainment
  • for war/to compete with other countries

As you can see from the number of strings connected from each photo, we realised that inventions often take place for multiple reasons.

We then looked further into inventions throughout history and started to create memes for each technological tool to answer the following question:
What circumstances/opportunities led to the development of important inventions?

We are excited to add these memes to our timeline of medical history in our classroom and hallway from the previous unit.

Take a look at what we have so far!

We were also very excited about finding these Easter eggs!

Thank you, PTA!
