Message from Miss d'Amours to the Grade 2 families:

Thank you very much for following this blog this year.

We had such a wonderful time together, and it was amazing to witness the emotional
as well as academic development of each child.

I truly appreciate the support given by parents and the school community throughout the year.

I hope that you all have a great summer!

Sincerely,

Miss d'Amours

Group Project on Space and the Solar System

For the past five weeks we have been inquirying into the space and our solar system.

Some of us decided to take action by creating a display about stars and planets to share our new knowledge!

We showed commitment and enthusiasm as we chose to spend many recess periods to work on this project.

Come to the grade 2 classroom to check out the display!

We are astronomers!

Hi everyone!

Our current unit is on the central idea:

Our solar system is made up of many planets with only one that has living things.

With heavy weight in the middle, we observed what happened when marbles were released into the simulator.

We realized that the solar system works like the gravity simulator.

The sun has a lot of gravity because it's the biggest and heaviest object in the solar system, causing the planets to orbit around it.

We came up with so many questions relating to space.

After sorting our questions, we decided on starting off by learning about stars.

We've been keeping track of the questions we've answered by putting circles around them.

Our science expert Ms. Lee helped us understand how energy works.

Energy is what helps stars keep shining!

Safety glasses on! Ready to go!

In this experiment, batteries were attached to the sticks we were holding.

When they touch the tiny fibers of the steel wool, energy was released!

The steel wool burned. The sun also gives off heat energy

We also created some artwork of planets and stars in space.

The first step was to splatter white paint mixed with glitter to show the stars shining far far away.

Once the stars had dried,  we used pastels to draw the planets.

We tried to making our drawings scientific by looking at pictures and images on the internet and in nonfiction books in the class.

Once we finished drawing our planets, we cut them out and glued them onto the black paper.

Check out these masterpieces!

Right now, the artwork is displayed on the bulletin board on the first floor.

Please come by to take a look!

See you later alligator!

Dragon Dance Assembly

This week, we had our dragon dance assembly.

It was in connection to our previous unit with the central idea:

Our culture and our origin are expressed in different ways.

Written below is an explanation by Tallis, Sarah, and Ryuki.

"Grade one and two learned about cultural expression. Japanese culture is different from Chinese culture. We tried our best to make a dragon using many colours and glued and cut.

The Monster Nian didn’t like the colours red and yellow. We needed many materials to make the dragons like paint, fabric, bedsheets, and boxes. In China there is a tradition to use red and yellow for happy times. That’s what we used. Because we wanted to express Chinese culture. "

In case you were too far away to be able to see the details of the five dragons, here they are!

Thank you to everyone who came to see our performance!

Have a great weekend :)

Poem Reading and Character Day

For the past few weeks, we have been exploring the world of poetry.

During this language unit, we have been sharpening our skills to visualize while reading by using our five senses.

Here, Pierre is reading a poem he worked hard on writing.

While you listen, close your eyes see if you can paint a picture in your head!

On another note, we had character day this morning to celebrate book week!

Check out all of our costumes filled with enthusiasm and creativity!

Have a great long weekend everyone :)

Happy 100th Day!

Today was the 100th day of school!

We celebrated by working on various activities relating the number 100!

We made 100th day hats and glasses...

We created 100th day drawings...

We imagined ourselves being 100 years old...

and measured and added numbers up to 100!

We were quite proud of our accomplishments!

We look forward to sharing the learner profiles and attitudes we have been using next Friday at the end of Project Week!

Bye for now!

Sorting Books: Fiction and Nonfiction

This week we inquired into different kinds of books.

We started off by using a Venn diagram to sort some of the class books into two categories:
fiction and nonfiction.

We looked at past Scholastic book order catalogues to determine if the books were fiction or nonfiction.

Reading the descriptions helped us make our decisions.

We used our fine motor skills to cut carefully.

In the process, we found some of our favourite authors and other books we were interested in reading!

Now that we have a clear understanding of the different types of books, it will help us find books in the library that meet our purpose and interests as readers!
