Personal Narrative Writing

In Grades 5 and 6, we have been working on a personal narrative writing unit.

As authors, we increased our self-management skills as we worked through the writing process of planning, drafting, revising, editing and publishing.

This week, we had a book celebration to proudly share our books with our classmates.

You can also see the students reading their books out loud on Seesaw Blog.

Below, we are posting the cover and first page of each book.

Our books are displayed on the first floor in the entrance area!

Personal Narrative Unit Celebration

This week, we celebrated publishing our second personal narrative pieces by reading our books out loud to our classmates!

We worked very hard as authors during this writing unit, applying different techniques we learned to write true stories, zooming into small moments in our lives.

During this writing unit, we increased our confidence and identity as authors so that we can work through the writing process of planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing with growing independence.

Here are some of the techniques we were introduced to in the mini-lessons.

We considered these techniques when we set goals for ourselves to work towards with the support of the teacher and our writing partner.

One key learning intention for most of us was that our stories conveyed an idea or a lesson.

We also kept in mind the general structure of how stories tend to go as you can see in the photo above.

Here is a video for you to see our celebration in action!

We also have postings on Seesaw Blog of us reading our books aloud so families, please use the password to log in and listen!

The Life of Steve Jobs Assembly

Today, we had our annual Grade 5/6 assembly!

As a literacy component of our unit on how "technology impacts the world of work and leisure", we worked together to write a script about the life of Steve Jobs.

For this project, we applied our research skills (media literacy) to use online platforms to find the information we were looking for.

We also used our communication skills (literacy) to write for the school community as the audience. We did this by taking notes based on our research about Steve Jobs and rewriting the text in our own words. Each student was responsible to write a section of the script.

If you were unable to make it, take a look at the video above!

Book Sharing Assembly

Over the past two months, we explored the genre of narratives during writers' workshop.

We learned to use various strategies during the different stages of the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing) to improve the quality of our work. We especially worked hard on describing our characters, settings, and actions in order to help paint a picture in the readers' heads.

During our last assembly, we finally had the opportunity to share our published work with our friends, families, and the rest of the school community!

We were all so proud of how far we had come as authors!

We hope you enjoyed reading the books!

Please feel free to take a look at the books in the library!
